MAN OF THE YEAR Charles Augustus Lindbergh certainly passed with flying colours and graduated first in his class from U.S. Air Service Flying School in 1925. Two years later, at 07:52 on 20 May 1927, he achieved world fame when he became the first to fly nonstop solo across the Atlantic which, during that same year, led to Lindbergh being named Man of the Year in Time Magazine. A title which he was also the first to receive. The dynamic Lindbergh who was nicknamed ”The lone Eagle” was very much a chip off the old block as far as the pioneering spirit was concerned. Many years previously, his grandfather on his father’s side had also ventured across the Atlantic, albeit in the opposite direction and by sea. He was accompanied by the Swedish immigrant, his son, Carl Månsson, who, influenced by the English language, later changed his name to Charles August Lindbergh. In 1902, he fathered the legendary pilot who was given the near-identical name, only August had now become Augustus – which was also the name of the first Roman emperor.
